Knoxville Home Inspection: Electrical Terms Explained

For buyers in Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville, Oak Ridge and across East Tennessee.

Request an electrician

Electrical items show up in almost every home inspection report, and the terms can sound alarming. Here's what the common ones usually mean in Knoxville-area homes, many of which have wiring from several eras. Your inspector saw the house and is the best guide to your report; a licensed electrician can confirm and price repairs.

At the panel

Double tap — Two wires under one breaker screw that's only rated for one. A common, usually inexpensive fix.

Undersized service — A 60- or 100-amp service that may struggle with modern loads. See panel upgrades.

Missing knockouts / open slots — Openings in the panel cover that should be closed for safety.

Panel at end of life — An old or problematic panel the inspector recommends having evaluated.

Outlets and protection

Open ground — A three-prong outlet with no ground connected. See outlets and GFCI protection.

Reversed polarity — Hot and neutral wires swapped at an outlet. Simple to correct.

No GFCI protection — Missing ground-fault protection in kitchens, baths, garages, basements or outdoors.

No AFCI protection — Missing arc-fault protection, common in older homes built before it was required.

Wiring types

Knob-and-tube — Very old, ungrounded wiring. Insurers often ask about it. See rewiring older homes.

Aluminum branch wiring — Found in some 1960s and 70s homes; needs compatible devices or special connectors.

Amateur wiring — Splices outside boxes, loose cables or extension cords used as permanent wiring.

How serious is it?

  • Monitor: older but functioning devices, labeling missing from the panel.
  • Fix soon: missing GFCIs, open grounds, double taps, reversed polarity.
  • Before closing: scorching, overheating, knob-and-tube in use, a failing panel.
