Fort Craig and Mary Blount

In 1785 Revolutionary War veteran John Craig built a palisade enclosing cabins, known as Fort Craig, where Maryville now stands, and he donated 50 acres next to it for a new town. It was incorporated on July 11, 1795, and named for Mary Grainger Blount, wife of territorial governor William Blount. Sam Houston's family moved here from Virginia in 1808.
